General information about the Region and ZAGREB.
Zagreb is a city of one
million inhabitants and is really the political, cultural and scientific centre
of Croatia. As a part of central Europe, Zagreb can certainly be called the
Croatian Metropolis. The first written record of Zagreb dates back to 1094, and
in 1994 it celebrated its 900th anniversary.
There are many important years
in its history such as 1242 when King Bela IV issued his " Golden Bull " granting Gradec the status of Free Royal City. In 1557 Zagreb became the
capital of Croatia. Other important dates include 1606, the founding year of
the first Grammar School (Gymnasium), and 1667 - the establishment of the first
University.
By 1862, Zagreb was connected
by rail to the rest of the Austro - Hungarian Empire; by 1866, Zagreb had
its own Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1910, the first international
trade exposition was held under the title of " The Zagreb Gathering
". The same exhibition is today held under the title The Zagreb Fair.
Zagreb is the host of many
events: the International Folk Festival, the International Flower Show, World
Festival of Animated Cartoons organised by the well known Zagreb School of
animated Film, as well as many other events.
There is also a very ancient
musical tradition in this city. Paganini and Liszt performed here and many well
known musicians were born in Zagreb. It is also the city of the famous Zagreb
Soloists, the Zagreb Quartet, which has hosted numerous international musical
festivals and competitions.

The major European air companies fly to Zagreb Airport. Bus transport is a half hour drive from the airport to the accommodation in Zagreb (17 km).
Zagreb is situated on the main road connecting Europe with Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
