Rowing has a very long tradition in Zagreb, but in the
last twenty years it has gone through a true revival.
Over the centuries rowing has been practised in the four
rowing clubs situated on the banks of the river Sava. When Zagreb was selected
for the 1987 World University Games, a new rowing course was opened which is
still considered to be one of the most beautiful ones in this part of Europe.
Although economic and political circumstances were not
favourable for sports in this area, rowing fans did not allow those
circumstances to become an obstacle for the further development of their sport.
The rowing family in Zagreb counts two thousand members
organised in five clubs. Every year, six hundred children attend rowing
classes, and five hundred students row for Zagreb University. In the last
couple of years, rowers from Zagreb have been winning gold medals in the Rowing
World Cup and different medals at the championships, achieving results we used
to dream about.
And it all begun with a world sporting event.
Bearing this fact in mind, all rowing fans in Zagreb will
consider the 2000 FISA World Junior & Senior non-Olympic Rowing
Championship as not only a sign of recognition of their efforts, but also as a
challenging task and honourable duty to organise this championship in the best
possible way and to promote this sport in the whole area.
By organising twelve international rowing regattas per
year in Zagreb, we are sure that we can to meet the necessary standards of the
World Championships, and on behalf of the Organising Committee I am inviting
you to join us for the 2000 FISA World Junior & Senior non-Olympic Rowing Championships.
Sincerely,
Zdravko Jurcec, B.Sc.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee
